Highgate tube station

Highgate tube station is a London Underground station on Archway Road near to Highgate in north London.
The station is on the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line, between Archway and East Finchley stations, and is in Travelcard Zone 3.
The station was built below an existing Great Northern Railway station as part of the Northern Heights plan, which would have seen Northern Line trains running (from the Northern City Line) through the surface station as well. The surface station, which lies in an open cutting between two tunnels, was rebuilt at the same time; the whole complex was designed by Charles Holden. Though the deep-level station came into use on January 19, 1941, the other parts of Northern Heights plan never came to fruition, and the surface station closed in 1954. The surface platforms and their buildings are still in place and visible. A surviving station building from the old Great Northern Railway station, now a private house, may be seen from Priory Gardens.
Before this tube station was built and named "Highgate", the station now called "Archway" (and up to then the northern terminus of the line) was called "Highgate".
