Herning is a municipality in the county of Ringkøbing on the peninsula of Jutland in western Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 542 km², and has a total population (2003) of 58,679 (some 29,000 of whom live in the town itself). It has grown rapidly in the last century and a half: in 1840 the total population of the then village of Herning was just 21 souls.
Home to the largest exhibition centre in Scandinavia, the town is known for its many trade fairs. Textile-weaving was once Herning's principal economic activity, though today the town enjoys a diversified industrial base.
Herning has twice been awarded the title of Danish City of the Year: in 1965 and 2003.
The cyclist Bjarne Riis was born in Herning.
