Hernando is a census-designated place located in Citrus County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 8,253.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 91.6 km² (35.4 mi²). 81.5 km² (31.5 mi²) of it is land and 10.1 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.02% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,253 people, 3,730 households, and 2,514 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 101.2/km² (262.2/mi²). There are 4,750 housing units at an average density of 58.3/km² (150.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.58% White, 2.27% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 1.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,730 households out of which 18.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.62.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 17.2% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 20.8% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 28.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 51 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.9 males.
