Henderson, New York

Henderson is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,377. The town is named after William Henderson, the original land owner.

History

The town had been surveyed and divided into lots by 1801, but settlers did not begin to arrive until 1802. The town was established in 1806.

Geography

The west boundary of the town is Lake Ontario.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 137.2 km² (53.0 mi²). 107.0 km² (41.3 mi²) of it is land and 30.2 km² (11.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.99% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,377 people, 577 households, and 406 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.9/km² (33.3/mi²). There are 1,557 housing units at an average density of 14.5/km² (37.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.69% White, 0.00% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 577 households out of which 23.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.76.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 29.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,019, and the median income for a family is $45,357. Males have a median income of $32,050 versus $24,792 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,071. 11.1% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Aspinwell Corners -- A location west of Henderson village.
  • Association Island -- An island at the north tip of Stony Point.
  • Babbitt Corners -- A location in the northeast part of the town
  • Bishop Street -- A location west of Butterville.
  • Butterville -- A hamlet by the east town line.
  • Clark Point -- A hamlet on the shore of Lake Ontario on Stony Point.
  • Crystal Lake -- A lake in the southeast part of the town, also called "Little Stony Creek Pond."
  • Henderson -- The hamlet of Henderson is on Route 178. It became an incorporated village in 1886, but subsequently dissolved the incorporation.
  • Henderson Bay -- An arm of Lake Ontario in the northwest part of the town, partly defined by Stony Point.
  • Henderson Harbor -- A hamlet on the shore of Henderson Bay.
  • Henderson Pond -- A lake southwest of Henderson village.
  • Hungerford Corners -- A hamlet west of Henderson village.
  • Roberts Corners -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town on Route 178.
  • Scotts Corners -- A location near the south town line on Route 178.
