Helix project

Helix is RealNetworks' open source and commercial source code media framework. The code is released under dual licenses: the commercial RealNetworks Community Source License and the open source RealNetworks Public Source License. The Helix DNA Client and the Helix Player additionally are licensed under the popular open source license GPL. Real contibuted the original code to the Helix Community to help the industry standardize on a multi-format, multi-operating system, multi-processor digital media platform.
1.0 milestone 1 was released on October 15, 2003, and 1.0 milestone 2 was released on January 15, 2004.
Helix Player is the open source media player built on top of Helix DNA Client for Linux and other operating systems. The Helix Player serves as the foundation for the RealPlayer for Linux. The Helix Player contains support for the following media formats:
- Audio formats: Ogg Vorbis, .au
- Video formats: Ogg Theora, AVI
- Description formats: SMIL, SDP
- Image formats: JPEG, GIF, PNG
- Protocols: RTSP, RTP, HTTP, Multicast
