He's a Woman, She's a Man (金枝玉葉) is a 1994 film directed by Peter Chan Ho Sun and written by James Yuen and Lee Chi Ngai.
It stars Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing, Carina Lau Kar Ling, Anita Yuen Wing Yee, Jordan Chan Siu Chun and Eric Tsang Chi Wai. Its many awards garnered include Best Actress at the 14th Annual HK Film Awards for Anita Yuen and Best Original Song for 'Chase' by Leslie Cheung.
Anita Yuen's character, Wing was a sassy girl who deeply idolizes Rose (Carina Lau) and Rose's boyfriend/producer Sam (Leslie Cheung). Rose has been groomed by Sam, achieving stardom and international acclaim and Sam wishes to try a hand at bringing up a male singer as well and decides to hold a talent search but only for males. Wing desperately wants to seize the opportunity to meet her idols for a long time and has always regretted the fact that she could never get close to either of them and when this chance crops up, she decides to enter the contest and disguise herself as a guy in order to qualify as a contestant! Her doting brother played by Jordan Chan trained her to act as a guy so as to practicalize this whimsical idea.
As fate would have it, Wing wins the contest thanks to the part of her fellow contestants whose talents were no better than hers. Rose was upset at the idea of bringing up a male artiste and purposely selected Wing as the winner and spitefully delegates the responsibility to Sam to see that Wing succeeds just as Rose was doing. This was a first sign that Wing probably saw that all is actually not well between the so-called match made in heaven between Sam and Rose.
Wing was invited to stay at Sam and Rose's home, much to the disagreement of the latter and Wing tried at that time to reconcile the two lovers' differences of opinion to no avail of course due to the fact that she cannot disclose herself as gal when certain situations required her to be herself. Trouble soon ensues as she found herself falling for Sam but as with the spirit of the movie, these were all for comic effect and the cast were excellent at displaying the funny side of when 3 persons are way too many in a relationship.
Throughout the movie, certain gay elements were hinted at but never fully developed, such as those portrayed by Eric Tsang which pokes fun at the imminent love that was developing between Wing and Sam as they worked together and had fun. The theme song is 'Chase' (追) sung by Leslie Cheung.
