Hayden, Colorado

Hayden is a town located in Routt County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,634. The town sits along U.S. Highway 40 in the Yampa River between Craig and Steamboat Springs. Historically a center of coal mining and agriculture, it consists today of a small cluster of homes and businesses. The town is named for Ferdinand Hayden, a surveyor who explored western Colorado during the late 19th century.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,634 people, 618 households, and 443 families residing in the town. The population density is 256.5/km² (664.1/mi²). There are 658 housing units at an average density of 103.3/km² (267.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.02% White, 0.12% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.96% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 5.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 618 households out of which 42.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the town the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.2 males.

History
Area first settled in 1875 with the town established in 1894 and incorporated in 1906. Named for F.V. Hayden, head of survey party for the U.S. Geological & Geographic Survey in the late 1860's.
