Haverstraw is a town located in Rockland County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 33,811.
The Town of Haverstraw contains a village, also known as Haverstraw. The town is on the east border of the county.
Geography
The east border of the town is the Hudson River, and the west town line is Orange County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 71.4 km² (27.5 mi²). 58.1 km² (22.4 mi²) of it is land and 13.3 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.66% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,811 people, 11,255 households, and 8,328 families residing in the town. The population density is 582.3/km² (1,508.3/mi²). There are 11,553 housing units at an average density of 199.0/km² (515.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 66.24% White, 10.27% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 3.21% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 15.65% from other races, and 4.12% from two or more races. 31.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,255 households out of which 37.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% are married couples living together, 15.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% are non-families. 21.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.94 and the average family size is 3.43.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.4 males.
