In Norse mythology, Hati was a wolf that chased Mani, the moon, through the sky every night. Lunar eclipses were caused by his coming close to succeeding. His brother, Skoll, chases after Sol, the sun. They both are supposedly children/brothers of Fenrir. Children would bang pots together and make a lot of noise to try and scare him away from the moon.
