Sir Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzadin Waddaulah (born July 15, 1946) is the Sultan of Brunei, the eldest son of Omar Ali Saifuddin III, the previous sultan. In addition to being Sultan, he is also the Prime Minister, Defense Minister, and Finance Minister of Brunei. His official political opposition leader is Hatta Zainal Abidin.
He became Crown Prince in 1961 and became Sultan on October 5, 1967, after his father abdicated, voluntarily. He has a vast private fortune, and is opposed to moves to democratise Brunei. The Sultan is famous for his vast automobile collection, much of which was reportedly destroyed intentionally. He was the world's richest man in 1997, worth almost $40 bil.
His heir is his son with Queen Saleha, Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah Bolkiah.
