Hartsville, Tennessee

Hartsville is a town located in Trousdale County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,395. It is the county seat of Trousdale CountyTemplate:GR, with which it shares a consolidated city-county government.

Hartsville is the county seat of Trousdale County, Tennessee and now coextensive with it as a metropolitan government by virtue of a referendum which passed in Trousdale County by a single vote. Trousdale County High School is located here, as well as a technical school operated by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Trousdale County is the only Tennessee county to have legalized parimutuel betting on horse racing, however no group has ever stepped forward actually to build a racetrack. Hartsville is located slightly north of the Cumberland River and is approximately fifty miles northeast of Nashville.

Hartsville was the site of a proposed nuclear generation plant to have been developed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, but this development was not completed despite an expenditure of over one billion dollars toward its construction.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²). 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,395 people, 938 households, and 601 families residing in the town. The population density is 259.8/km² (673.5/mi²). There are 1,043 housing units at an average density of 113.1/km² (293.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 75.70% White, 22.46% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 938 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% are married couples living together, 18.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,797, and the median income for a family is $33,523. Males have a median income of $27,232 versus $21,429 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,226. 19.7% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.0% of those under the age of 18 and 24.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
