Harkers Island is a census-designated place located in Carteret County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,525.
Geography
Harkers Island is located at 34°41'40" North, 76°33'19" West (34.694503, -76.555383)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.0 km² (3.8 mi²). 6.6 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 33.77% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,525 people, 661 households, and 497 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 230.9/km² (598.4/mi²). There are 1,109 housing units at an average density of 167.9/km² (435.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.56% White, 0.00% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 661 households out of which 21.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.9% are married couples living together, 5.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% are non-families. 21.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.65.
