HMAS Tarakan

Two ships of the Royal Australian Navy have been named for the town of Tarakan in Borneo, site of an attack by the I Australian Corps on 1 May 1945.
The first HMAS Tarakan was a Mark II landing ship built for the Royal Navy by R. and W. Hawthorne, Leslie and Company at Hebburn-on-Tyne in England and launched on 28 November 1944. The ship commissioned into the RAN on 4 July 1946 and was named Tarakan on 16 December 1948. HMAS Tarakan paid off on 25 January 1950 and was sold on 12 March 1954.
The second HMAS Tarakan (L-129) is a Balikpapan class heavy landing craft laid down by Walkers Limited at Maryborough in Queensland in December 1971, launched on 16 March 1972 and commissioned on 15 June 1973.
