Gun Hill Road (IRT White Plains Road Line station)

Gun Hill Road at one time had time two levels, the lower serving the 3rd Avenue El, and the upper serving the White Plains Road Interborough Rapid Transit line. The lower level has been abandoned since the termination of El service in 1973; the upper level is still active, with three tracks and two island platforms and sodium lights. The main crossunder is located on the lower level. Until 2004 when a station refurbishing project began the lower level mezzanine was visible behind a gated area. Down one more level to the street is the main station house. A view over the edge from the southbound platform at one time revealed hints of the lower level having had a wide island platform and two tracks. The platform and tracks have been removed but the trackways remain. The junction tracks from the lower to upper level (making a five track/trackway line for a short distance: from west to east, they were as follows: main southbound, 3rd Avenue southbound, main center, 3rd Avenue northbound, main northbound). At one time old signs on the lower level were still visible from the windows of downtown trains arriving into the upper level station but were removed as part of the refurbishing project.
The refurbishing project (still going on in 2005) will upgrade the station with a station house at street level located at Gun Hill and White Plains Roads (vs the original which is one short block north of Gun Hill Road), new escalators and elevators which will make this station ADA compliant.
