Gregorio Fuentes (July 11, 1897 – January 13, 2002) was a Cuban nautical captain. He was born on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, and migrated to Cuba when he was six years old.
Fuentes was captain of the Pilar, which he sailed through Cuba with his friend Ernest Hemingway whom he met in 1928. He was probably the inspiration for the protagonist of The Old Man and the Sea.
Fuentes, suffering from cancer, died in Cojimar in 2002, having never read The Old Man and the Sea. He was 104 years old.
