Grass Lake, Michigan

Grass Lake is a village located in Jackson County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,082.
Grass Lake was first settled in 1829 by David Sterling, whose family moved here from Niagara County, New York.
In 1842, the coming of the railroad helped make Grass Lake a permanent community when they built a station here: it stands, well-preserved, along the still active rail line to the east of town.
Grass Lake was named for the shallow, marshy lake just to its north.
Today the greater Grass Lake area includes the Village of Grass Lake, Grass Lake Township, and parts of the Waterloo Recreational Area north of I-94.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,082 people, 421 households, and 293 families residing in the village. The population density is 435.2/km² (1,124.2/mi²). There are 436 housing units at an average density of 175.4/km² (453.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.80% White, 0.28% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.37% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 421 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the village the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $45,078, and the median income for a family is $52,143. Males have a median income of $45,714 versus $31,250 for females.
