Grambling is a town located in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,693. The town is home to Grambling State University.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 14.3 km² (5.5 mi²). 14.2 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,693 people, 1,173 households, and 649 families residing in the town. The population density is 330.1/km² (855.4/mi²). There are 1,408 housing units at an average density of 99.0/km² (256.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 1.07% White, 97.10% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,173 households out of which 24.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.0% are married couples living together, 22.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.6% are non-families. 31.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.99.

The age distribution of the population is: 13.4% under the age of 18, 54.9% from 18 to 24, 12.8% from 25 to 44, 11.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. Both the age distribution and median age are typical of college towns. For every 100 females there are 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $19,331, and the median income for a family is $27,857. Males have a median income of $22,417 versus $20,842 for females. The per capita income for the town is $8,903. 40.0% of the population and 30.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 48.4% of those under the age of 18 and 13.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
