Grafton is a city located in Taylor County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,489. It is the county seat of Taylor CountyTemplate:GR. The only two national cemeteries in West Virginia are located in Grafton. Mother's Day was founded in Grafton on May 10, 1908 and the city is the home to the International Mother's Day Shrine. Grafton boasts one of the oldest observances of Memorial Day in America.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.8 km² (3.8 mi²). 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.16% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,489 people, 2,277 households, and 1,448 families residing in the city. The population density is 575.9/km² (1,491.1/mi²). There are 2,575 housing units at an average density of 270.2/km² (699.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.07% White, 0.84% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,277 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 33.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.95.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who are 65 years of age or older.
