Gowanda is a village located in New York and lies partly in Erie County and partly in Cattaraugus County . As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,842.
The Village of Gowanda is partly in the Town of Collins in Erie County and the Town of Persia in Cattaraugus County.
The village is on US 62 as well as Routes 4, 39, and 438.
Gowanda Airport (D59) is a general aviation grass strip, located northwest of the village.

History
The Village of Gowanda was incorporated in 1848.
Geography
Gowanda is located at 42°27'48" North, 78°56'11" West (42.463197, -78.936350)Template:GR.
The village is split by Cattaraugus Creek, the dividing boundary between Erie and Cattaraugus counties.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.62% is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,842 people, 1,161 households, and 667 families residing in the village. The population density is 685.8/km² (1,772.3/mi²). There are 1,277 housing units at an average density of 308.2/km² (796.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 62.47%% White, 0.49% African American, 41.54% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 1.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,161 households out of which 27.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.1% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.5% are non-families. 36.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the village the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $29,565, and the median income for a family is $39,094. Males have a median income of $32,279 versus $25,281 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,323. 14.4% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.2% of those under the age of 18 and 9.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
