On June 26, 1997, the President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, on the nomination of the 28th Dáil Éireann, appointed Bertie Ahern as Taoiseach. On the nomination of the Taoiseach, and following the Dáil's "approval" the following Irish government (Rialtas na hÉireann) was appointed.
The Twenty-Eighth Dáil was the second longest Dáil in history, lasting 1,806 days. The Twenty-Fifth Government served in office until June 6, 2002.
