History

Goshen was first settled in 1761 and was officially incorporated in 1781.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 45.9 km² (17.7 mi²). 45.0 km² (17.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.98% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 921 people, 365 households, and 247 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.5/km² (53.0/mi²). There are 536 housing units at an average density of 11.9/km² (30.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.02% White, 0.00% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 365 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 18.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 31.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.

The D.A.R. State Forest was established in 1929 when the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) donated 1,020 acres to the Commonwealth. Almost 750 additional acres have been acquired since then, including Upper and Lower Highland Lakes. Facilities include: Fishing, Canoeing/kyaking, Accessable trails, Beaches,Camping, Wildlife observation, Picnicking, Showers, and winter Ice-skating and cross-country skiing. The DAR state forest has all most all of its facilities Handicap-acessiabe.
