- This article is about the book series by R. L. Stine. For the bumps that form on skin, see Goose bumps.
Goosebumps is a very popular American series of children's horror fiction books created by author R. L. Stine. Sixty-two books were published under the Goosebumps umbrella title from 1992 to 1997.
Like the later Harry Potter books, the books of the Goosebumps series were often challenged in libraries; they were 15th on the American Library Association's list of most frequently challenged books from 1990 to 1999 [1] (http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bbwlinks/top100challenged.htm).
The series spawned a gamebook spinoff, also written by R. L. Stine called Give Yourself Goosebumps. Several of the titles in the series were made into movies; the series also inspired a television series named Goosebumps which ran from 1995 to 1998. The book Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask inspired two videos.
After the original series ended, Stine began writing Goosebumps: Series 2000 books, although this spinoff of the original series did not last long, due to declining popularity. There are 25 Series 2000 books, including one sequel to an original series (Night of the Living Dummy).

Plots and common features
The Goosebumps series is clearly written for a younger audience, avoiding graphic scenes or seriously disturbing storylines. Stine's plots conform to stereotypes of the horror genre, allowing for easy categorization of his books according to plot (monsters, ghosts, etc.). Even so, Stine did come up with a few interesting variations, for instance in Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes. Settings are always generic, suburbs, summer camps and such. Most of the stories have a small twist at the end, but they almost always end happily. Some of the books spawned sequels; Monster Blood had no less than four appearances. These sequels seemed merely to repeat the type of story from the original, and tended not to expand very far on the plot.
The narrative is nearly always first-person. The protagonist is almost always eleven years old, except in the case of sequels starring the same character. The protagonist is also often picked on by older siblings, or jealous of younger ones.
List of Goosebumps books
Most of the titles are now out of print, although as of 2004, the most popular ones have been reissued.
