Gong Li (Template:Zh-stp) (born December 31, 1965) is a Chinese film actress. Gong is her surname.
Born in Shenyang, Liaoning, China, she has appeared in most films directed by Zhang Yimou up till 1995. She grew up in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province. In 1985, she enrolled in the Central Academy of Drama to study acting, and graduated in 1989.
She was still a student there when Zhang Yimou chose her in 1987 for the lead role in his first film as a director, Red Sorghum, which was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. She continued acting in Zhang's films well into the mid-1990s, gaining an international reputation as for her sensuality and beauty, being voted as one of People's magazine 100 most beautiful people in 2001.
One of the most popular actresses in China, she and Zhang Yimou created a scandal during their artistic tenure together, being long-term lovers, despite Zhang's marital status. The duo eventually broke up in 1995, and Gong Li married a Singaporean businessman the next year.
Gong Li is an ambassador for L'Oreal cosmetics and recipient of the Ordres des Arts et des Lettres in 1988. She won the Best Actress award for the Venice Film Festival for her role as a peasant woman in The Story of Qiuju.
