Gnadenhutten, Ohio

Gnadenhutten is a village located on the Tuscarawas River in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,280.

Gnadenhutten was founded as a settlement of Lenape Native Americans affiliated with the Moravian church. This community remained neutral during the American Revolutionary War, but one hundred of them were massacred in 1782 by American revolutionaries in retaliation for raids carried out by other bands.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,280 people, 513 households, and 377 families residing in the village. The population density is 494.2/km² (1,281.7/mi²). There are 539 housing units at an average density of 208.1/km² (539.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.45% White, 0.08% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 513 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the village the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $34,286, and the median income for a family is $38,000. Males have a median income of $32,026 versus $20,526 for females. The per capita income for the village is $15,961. 8.8% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
