Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree, New York

Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree is a census-designated place located in Suffolk County, New York and the Town of Babylon. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 333. It contains several small beach communities along the barrier island south of Long Island. In order from West to East, these include West Gilgo beach (on the Nassau/Suffolk county border), Gilgo beach, Cedar beach, Oak Beach Island, Oak Beach, Captree Island.

Geography

Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree is located at 40°38'28" North, 73°16'42" West (40.641100, -73.278195)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²). 7.1 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 25.21% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 333 people, 161 households, and 94 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 47.1/km² (122.1/mi²). There are 305 housing units at an average density of 43.1/km² (111.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.00% White, 0.30% African American, 0.00% Native American, 2.70% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 161 households out of which 14.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.0% are non-families. 34.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.07 and the average family size is 2.64.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 13.5% under the age of 18, 1.5% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 34.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 109.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $66,250, and the median income for a family is $105,870. Males have a median income of $61,250 versus $37,083 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $55,813. 0.9% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

These numbers are presumably for full time inhabitants as most of these houses are second homes and not primary residences.

Interestingly, the land for these communities is not privately owned, but leased from the State. of New York.
