According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 19.4 km² (7.5 mi²). 18.3 km² (7.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.00% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,599 people, 3,036 households, and 1,897 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 416.2/km² (1,078.1/mi²). There are 3,595 housing units at an average density of 196.9/km² (510.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 38.70% White, 57.43% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.96% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. 6.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,036 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% are married couples living together, 20.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.03.
