Gays Mills is a village located in Crawford County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 625.

History

Gays Mills is famous for being the home of the Twinning family, who gave the village mild fame when a Twinning took apples he had planted to the World's Fair, which turned out to be a huge success. He, and he companion, are honored with a Historical Marker on a hill overlooking the village. Apples are now currently grown heavily in Crawford County, with orchards surrounding the village. His family farmhouse, which was started before the Civil War, is located on a road off Main Street and is currently undergoing restoration under the surviving Twinnings, the Slayton family.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.65% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 625 people, 261 households, and 169 families residing in the village. The population density is 52.5/km² (136.0/mi²). There are 289 housing units at an average density of 24.3/km² (62.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.68% White, 0.16% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 261 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the village the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 82.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $29,250, and the median income for a family is $36,607. Males have a median income of $32,875 versus $18,295 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,786. 15.8% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.0% of those under the age of 18 and 13.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
