Gaylord, Michigan

Gaylord is a city located in Otsego County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,681. It is the county seat of Otsego County6.
Gaylord styles itself as the "Alpine Village" and the city center features many buildings with Tyrolean style motifs. Receiving abundant snowfall and experiencing mild summer temperatures, in recent years the area around Gaylord has become known for its many skiing and golf resorts, one of the largest such concentrations in the Midwest.
Gaylord is also seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord; it is by far the smallest settlement serving as the location of an active Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.2 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.25% is water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,681 people, 1,584 households, and 888 families residing in the city. The population density is 359.8/km² (932.8/mi²). There are 1,773 housing units at an average density of 173.3/km² (449.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.50% White, 0.30% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.55% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,584 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.9% are non-families. 38.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.97.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 79.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $28,770, and the median income for a family is $36,654. Males have a median income of $33,264 versus $19,815 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,313. 9.7% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.8% of those under the age of 18 and 13.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
