Garrett is a city located in DeKalb County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,803. Founded in 1875, Garrett was named for John W. Garrett (1820-1884), president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from 1858 to 1884.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²). 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,803 people, 2,185 households, and 1,516 families residing in the city. The population density is 715.8/km² (1,856.5/mi²). There are 2,364 housing units at an average density of 291.6/km² (756.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.47% White, 0.29% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 2.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,185 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.15.
In the city the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $41,747, and the median income for a family is $48,403. Males have a median income of $35,814 versus $22,389 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,260. 6.0% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

- Thomas Taggart (1856-1929), Mayor of Indianapolis, Indiana, 1895-1901, lived in Garrett, 1874-1877, as manager of B&O Railroad depot restaurant.
