Garner, North Carolina

Garner is a town located in Wake County, North Carolina, a suburb of Raleigh. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 17,757.

History

Land near the town of Garner was first settled around 1751; it became the village of Garner's Station and received a post office in 1878, but the community had its charter repealed in 1891. In 1905, the charter was reinstated as the Town of Garner. The town lay along US 70, the first paved highway to be built in North Carolina.

Presently, the town adjoins the city of Raleigh and is considered a suburb of the state capital.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.2 km² (13.6 mi²). 33.2 km² (12.8 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.60% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 17,757 people, 6,950 households, and 4,830 families residing in the town. The population density is 534.8/km² (1,385.1/mi²). There are 7,252 housing units at an average density of 218.4/km² (565.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 67.02% White, 27.13% African American, 0.41% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.77% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 4.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,950 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $47,380, and the median income for a family is $58,302. Males have a median income of $37,359 versus $29,805 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,433. 6.8% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.9% of those under the age of 18 and 10.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
