According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.1 km² (5.5 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.83% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,357 people, 4,703 households, and 2,873 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 674.0/km² (1,745.1/mi²). There are 7,995 housing units at an average density of 575.9/km² (1,491.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.02% White, 1.00% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,703 households out of which 12.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.96 and the average family size is 2.40.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 11.2% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 21.5% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 34.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 54 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.1 males.

Hurriance Hazel
The worst disaster in the city's history occurred on 14 October 1954. Hurricane Hazel slammed into the city and left only 2 houses habitable.
