Gainesville is a town located in Wyoming County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,333.
The Town of Gainesville was established in 1814. Gainesville is also the name of a village in the town. The town is on the eastern border of the county.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 92.5 km² (35.7 mi²). 92.2 km² (35.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,333 people, 873 households, and 644 families residing in the town. The population density is 25.3/km² (65.5/mi²). There are 945 housing units at an average density of 10.2/km² (26.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.46% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 873 households out of which 37.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% are non-families. 21.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
