Fulton, Missouri

Fulton is a city located in Callaway County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,128. It is the county seat of Callaway CountyTemplate:GR.

1936 Olympic Champion Helen Stephens (the Fulton Flash) was born in Fulton. Winston Churchill made his famous Iron Curtain speech in Fulton at Westminister College in 1946. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher visited the same college.

Fulton is located at 38°51'3" North, 91°56'53" West (38.850826, -91.948060)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.4 km² (11.4 mi²). 29.3 km² (11.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 12,128 people, 3,700 households, and 2,208 families residing in the city. The population density is 414.0/km² (1,072.3/mi²). There are 4,131 housing units at an average density of 141.0/km² (365.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 81.26% White, 15.44% African American, 0.41% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,700 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% are married couples living together, 14.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 18.0% under the age of 18, 20.0% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 129.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 134.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,635, and the median income for a family is $41,722. Males have a median income of $27,418 versus $21,663 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,489. 11.9% of the population and 8.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
