Friendship, Maine

Friendship is a town located in Knox County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,204.

The Friendship Sloop, a gaff-rigged sailboat designed for lobstering and fishing, takes its name from this town. Boat builder Wilbur A. Morse produced many such sloops here from the 1880s to the early 20th century. (The Friendship Sloop Society (http://www.fss.org/) promotes preservation and enjoyment of this design.)

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 80.4 km² (31.0 mi²). 36.3 km² (14.0 mi²) of it is land and 44.1 km² (17.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 54.82% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,204 people, 508 households, and 354 families residing in the town. The population density is 33.2/km² (85.9/mi²). There are 849 housing units at an average density of 23.4/km² (60.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.34% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 508 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% are married couples living together, 6.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.76.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,348, and the median income for a family is $41,648. Males have a median income of $29,605 versus $19,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,409. 11.0% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.7% of those under the age of 18 and 11.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
