Fredonia is a village located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 10,706.

History
The Village of Fredonia was incorporated in 1829 and is in the Town of Pomfret, New York. The village borders the City of Dunkirk and is the home of the State University of New York Fredonia, which originally opened as Fredonia Academy in 1826. That building is now the village hall. The original name for the area was Canadaway (from the Indian word Ganadawao, meaning Among the hemlocks). In the mid 19th century, Fredonia was the first meeting place of the Grange and also the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 13.4 km² (5.2 mi²). 13.4 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,706 people, 3,641 households, and 1,951 families residing in the village. The population density is 796.5/km² (2,061.8/mi²). There are 3,829 housing units at an average density of 284.9/km² (737.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.36% White, 1.02% African American, 0.32% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,641 households out of which 24.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.4% are non-families. 30.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the village the population is spread out with 15.7% under the age of 18, 38.0% from 18 to 24, 18.0% from 25 to 44, 16.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 83.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $34,712, and the median income for a family is $49,549. Males have a median income of $36,322 versus $27,718 for females. The per capita income for the village is $15,685. 19.0% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
