Fountain City is a town located in Wayne County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 735. It was formerly known as "Newport." Quaker abolitionist and Underground Railroad leader Levi Coffin lived there from 1826 to 1847.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 735 people, 291 households, and 212 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,091.5/km² (2,795.5/mi²). There are 309 housing units at an average density of 458.9/km² (1,175.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.69% White, 0.68% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 0.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 291 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% are non-families. 24.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.95.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males.

Historic site
- Levi Coffin House, 113 US 27 North, (765) 847-2432, former home of Quaker abolitionist Levi Coffin, was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. It is now operated as an Indiana State Historic Site and is open June-August, Tuesday-Saturday, 1:00-4:00; and September-October, Saturday only, 1:00-4:00.
