Fortean Times
|
Fortean Times is a British monthly magazine of Fortean phenomena: anomalous phenomena of the sort popularised by Charles Fort. It was founded in November of 1973 with the intention of continuing the work of Fort. [1] (http://www.forteantimes.com/mag_info/about.shtml) [2] (http://www.frogboy.freeuk.com/iwfs1.html)
The magazine was co-founded by Bob Rickard and Paul Sieveking. It was edited by Bob but he has handed over the reins to David Sutton although he still helps out and Paul is still actively editing the letters page and some of the specialist topic areas. Its circulation is approximately 40,000 copies monthly. [3] (http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/features/featuresfeed/page.cfm?objectid=12838939&method=full&siteid=89488)
The identification of correct original sources by contributors is a defining feature of the magazine, and indeed Charles Fort himself. However, the "objective reality" of these reports is not as important.
The magazine periodically holds a convention, Fortean Times UnConvention (UnCon), in London, and maintains an online presence through its official website. The site tracks Fortean news stories, holds a small archive of articles and photographs, and supports a busy message-board where the outré is discussed and dissected.
