Forrest City is a city located in St. Francis County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,774. The city is the county seat of St. Francis CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 42.2 km² (16.3 mi²). 42.1 km² (16.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 14,774 people, 4,581 households, and 3,165 families residing in the city. The population density is 350.8/km² (908.7/mi²). There are 5,164 housing units at an average density of 122.6/km² (317.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 35.52% White, 60.93% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. 8.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,581 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% are married couples living together, 28.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.23.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 116.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,111, and the median income for a family is $27,432. Males have a median income of $29,313 versus $21,295 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,716. 33.4% of the population and 29.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 45.9% of those under the age of 18 and 22.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
