Forest Stewardship Council

The Forest Stewardship Council is a non-profit environmental organization based in Bonn, Germany. To date, the Council's mission is "to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests". People interested in sustainable consumption of lumber can seek to acquire lumber the Council has certified.
It was organized in 1993 and is funded by various businesses, governments, and evironmental organizations like the WWF.
A timber company or other organization that wished to become FSC certified and bear their logo contacts the FSC which then sends out various forest certification organizations that spend 2 weeks inspecting the practices and maintenence of the forestry resource. The final step is to ensure that the trail of lumber coming from FSC accredited forests ends up with the proper logo marking so that consumers will be assured they are actually buying FSC certified products. A paper trail will follow the tree that is cut down from FSC forests all the way to it being processed and stamped with an FSC logo for sale at large retailers.
