Template:Titlelacksdiacritics The city of Focşani [pron. fohk-SHAAN] in the county of Vrancea in Romania lies on the river Milcov, which formed the ancient frontier of the former principalities of Moldavia and Walachia, and has a population (as of 2002) of 103,219.
The vicinity has minerals such as iron, copper, coal and petroleum. The line Focshani/Galatz featured a very strong line of fortifications, known as the Sereth Line.
A congress between Russian and Turkish diplomats took place near the town in 1772. In the neighbourhood the Turks suffered a severe defeat at the hands of the allied forces of Austrians under Prince Josias of Saxe-Coburg and Russians under Aleksandr Suvorov in 1789.
