Fishkill is a village within the Town of Fishkill located in Dutchess County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,735.
The Village of Fishkill is in the northeast part of the town on US Route 9.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,735 people, 965 households, and 400 families residing in the village. The population density is 761.2/km² (1,978.8/mi²). There are 1,011 housing units at an average density of 443.6 persons/km² (1,153.0 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 93.72% White, 2.77% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.15% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.27% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 6.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 965 households out of which 14.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.2% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 58.5% are non-families. 53.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 32.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.80 and the average family size is 2.74.
In the village the population is spread out with 14.1% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 30.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 74.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $36,344, and the median income for a family is $59,737. Males have a median income of $48,750 versus $31,898 for females. The per capita income for the village is $26,504. 8.4% of the population and 4.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.8% are under the age of 18 and 8.9% are 65 or older.
The Name
In 1996 the animal rights group, PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, requested that the town change its name, claiming it suggests cruelty to fish. The kill part in the name is actually the Dutch word for stream or creek and is common in the names of many communities in the area, which was settled by the Dutch in the early 1600s.
