Fayette, New York

Fayette is a town located in Seneca County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,643.

The Town of Fayette is on the western border of the county.

History

The town was established from part of the Town of Romulus in 1800. At the time of its founding it was the Town of Washington, but adopted the current name in 1803. The Seneca chief Red Jacket and Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism were famous early residents.

Geography

The west town line is Seneca Lake, and the east town line is Cayuga Lake.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 172.2 km² (66.5 mi²). 142.9 km² (55.2 mi²) of it is land and 29.3 km² (11.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,643 people, 1,367 households, and 1,011 families residing in the town. The population density is 25.5/km² (66.0/mi²). There are 1,680 housing units at an average density of 11.8/km² (30.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.08% White, 0.52% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,367 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% are non-families. 20.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $43,259, and the median income for a family is $52,163. Males have a median income of $34,457 versus $24,737 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,186. 4.3% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.4% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
