Fagersta is a municipality in Västmanland County in central Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 270.7 km². Of the total population of 12,381 - 6,154 are male and 6,227 are female. The population density of the community is 46 inhabitants per km².
The city of Fagersta received its privileges in 1944 when the industrial hot spot of Fagersta and its service oriented neighbour; the town of Västanfors, merged under the name Fagersta. Today the city counts a population of 11,930 souls (1996). The city is located in the crossing between the two railways between Ludvika-Västerås and Avesta (Krylbo)-Örebro, in the heart of the historic Bergslagen region rich in copper and iron ore. There has been mining activity in the Fagersta area since the 15th century but it wasn't organized until the 17th century and wasn't made a corporation until 1873, when Fagersta Bruks AB was founded.
