Excitebike

The first Excitebike game was released in Japan on November 30th, 1984 at a price of 5500 Yen; it saw a US release in October 1985. It is also one of the NES games obtainable in the GameCube game, Animal Crossing and it has been re-release for the Game Boy Advance portable video game system as part of the Classic NES Series. An enhanced version was released in 1987 for Nintendo's Vs. Unisystem and in Japan for the Famicom Disk System. In addition, it was also released as a 5 E-card set game for the now discontinued E-reader, a device for the Game Boy Advance used for scanning special "E-cards" to play games, obtain imformation, and (later on in it's life) link to another Game Boy Advance or Nintendo Gamecube to get new items, levels, powerups, etc. for certain games.

In Excitebike, there are three modes of play.

Game A

In Game A, the player races against a certain time limit. The goal is to qualify for the next track by coming in at third place or above. The time to beat is located on the on the stadium walls (for first place) and in the lower right corner (for third place).

Game B

Game B is similar to Game A, except there are computer-assisted riders on the track. They act as another obstacle, and hitting one will cause you to fall of your bike and lose time.

Design Mode

In Design Mode, the player has the ability to build his or her own racing tracks. The player can choose hills and obstacles of various sizes and place them. The player can also choose where to finish the lap, and how many laps there are (up to nine). After it is finished, there is the option to save the track and race on it in Game A and Game B. The game would save the track to cassette tape; however, since the Famicom Data Recorder device needed for this purpose was only available in Japan (intended for use with Nintendo's Family Basic), the saving option was effectively unavailable to US customers (the game's US manual states that "Save and Load menu selections are not operable in this game; they have been programmed in for potential product developments.")

Excitebike 64

Excitebike 64 was released on June 23, 2000 for the Nintendo 64 video game console system.

It is vastly different then the original Excitebike. Players choose one of the motocross racers, each with various skills, and race around dirt tracks. The aim is to win and unlock more courses.

Aside from the normal races, there are other various biking games, which players have to unlock. These features include:

  • A free-range desert race, where players race over hills to reach certain targets first.
  • Bike-soccer games.
  • The ability to play the NES Excitebike.
  • A recreation of the NES Excitebike with 3D graphics.
