Eve van Grafhorst was a toddler when she contracted HIV via a blood transfusion. She was banned from her local pre school in Australia, after other parents threatened to withdraw their children for fear of them contracting the virus.
She moved with her family to New Zealand in 1986, as a result of the prejudice and discrimination. In 1992 she was the recipient of the Variety Gold Heart Award. She died in 1993, aged 11 years.
