Erwin is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,227.

History
Erwin was formed from the Town of Painted Post in 1826.
Geography
The town is west of Corning, New York. The Tioga River and US Route 15 pass through the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.4 km² (39.2 mi²). 100.2 km² (38.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,227 people, 2,977 households, and 1,949 families residing in the town. The population density is 72.1/km² (186.8/mi²). There are 3,196 housing units at an average density of 31.9/km² (82.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.13% White, 2.24% African American, 0.18% Native American, 4.59% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,977 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the town the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $44,386, and the median income for a family is $57,169. Males have a median income of $44,155 versus $28,795 for females. The per capita income for the town is $27,192. 6.7% of the population and 5.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
