Eochaid Airem
|
Eochaid Airem ("ploughman") was a legendary High King of Ireland of the 2nd century BC. He succeeded his brother Eochaid Feidlech to the throne.
He married Étain, who had previously been the wife of Midir of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Midir demanded that he gave her back to him but Eochaid refused, but was then tricked by Midir, who turned himself and Étain into swans and escaped from Eochaid's palace, located at Tara. When Eochaid insisted on the return of his wife, Midir brought fifty women with the appearance of Étain and asked Eochaid to choose the correct one. The one Eochaid chose was his own daughter, known as Étain Óg. Their daughter by (involuntary) incest, Mes Buachalla, was the mother of Conaire Mor.
