Emporia State University (ESU) is a comprehensive Regents university serving residents of Kansas. Located in the Bluestem Region of the Flint Hills [northeast quarter of Kansas], ESU's location is in proximity to the three major metropolitan areas of Kansas; Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City. The Emporia State University campus, original 20 acres (80,000 m²), covers 200 acres (800,000 m²) . ESU is located in the city of Emporia (on the Kansas Turnpike), in Lyon County.
Originally known as the Kansas State Normal, the school was renamed Kansas State Teacher's College in 1923 and renamed again as Emporia Kansas State College in 1974, before the permanent Emporia State University was chosen in 1977. The Teacher's College, the university's school of education, is still the largest division in the university. The School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) is well respected.
The University is the home of the William Allen White library and the National Teachers Hall of Fame.
The ESU mascot is the Hornet.
