Ellicott, New York

Ellicott is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,280. The town is named after Joseph Ellicott, an agent of the Holland Land Company.

The Town of Ellicott is centrally located in the county and east of Chautauqua Lake.

History

The Town of Ellicott was incorporated in 1812 and was one of the first three towns in the county. The City of Jamestown, New York is the most significant community in this town and separated from the town in 1886.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 79.0 km² (30.5 mi²). 79.0 km² (30.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.

The town borders Chautauqua Lake.

The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) passes through the town north of the City of Jamestown.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,280 people, 3,818 households, and 2,596 families residing in the town. The population density is 117.5/km² (304.4/mi²). There are 4,104 housing units at an average density of 52.0/km² (134.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.69% White, 0.53% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,818 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,333, and the median income for a family is $47,813. Males have a median income of $39,144 versus $22,481 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,296. 8.8% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Chautauqua County Airport/Jamestown (JHW) -- The county airport with scheduled flights and general aviation services is northwest of the city.
  • Elmhurst -- A hamlet on the north side of Chautauqua Lake northwest of Jametown.
  • Falconer -- The Village of Falconer, east of Jamestown.
  • Fluvanna -- A hamlet northwest of Jamestown.
  • Jamestown -- The City of Jamestown is in the south part of the town.
  • Kimball Stand -- A location on the north town line on Route 60.
  • Levant -- A hamlet on the east town line north of Falconer.
  • Longview -- A hamlet on the south side of Chautauqua Lake west of Celoron.
  • West Ellicott -- A location on the west side of the town.
  • Ross Mills -- A location north of Jamestown on Route 60.
