Ellery is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,576.
The Town of Ellery was incorporated in 1821. The town is northwest of Jamestown, New York and is on the east side of Chautauqua Lake.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 123.3 km² (47.6 mi²). 123.2 km² (47.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.
The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) crosses Chautauqua Lake at Bemus Point.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,576 people, 1,852 households, and 1,316 families residing in the town. The population density is 37.1/km² (96.2/mi²). There are 2,630 housing units at an average density of 21.3/km² (55.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.40% White, 0.20% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,852 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.91.
In the town the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $41,916, and the median income for a family is $48,093. Males have a median income of $40,733 versus $29,128 for females.
